Vestibular Therapy

What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

The key treatment for almost all of the conditions that can cause dizziness is vestibular rehabilitation.  Vestibular Rehabiliation uses assessment, a variety of manoevres and specific exercises to help with vertigo, dizziness and  to help the development of vestibular compensation.

Vestibular compensation is a process that allows the brain to regain balance control and minimise dizziness symptoms when there is damage to, or an imbalance between, the right and left vestibular organs in the inner ear. Essentially, the brain copes with the disorientating signals coming from the inner ears by learning to rely more on the alternative signals coming from the eyes, ankles, legs and neck to maintain balance. Vestibular compensation can be successfully achieved even when the damage to the inner ear is permanent.

Dizzyness/vertigo can be caused by simply rolling over in bed and can be a scary feeling, leaving some individuals unable to walk, stand or even get out of bed.  Most individuals that I get to see have had the problem for months due to going round and round in circles in the health system.  Your initial thought when you are feeling dizzy is to go and see your Gp (which as we know may take a while), the Gp may give you some medicine and then refer you to an ENT specialist.  After weeks/sometimes months of waiting for referrals and appointments an ENT specialist may send you to a Vestibular Rehabiliation Physiotherapist if there is one in the area and again with a waiting list.  Vestibular rehabilitation works best when I can see you within days!  There are many different types of vertigo but some vertigo clients I can get 100% better in one session while others may take a few sessions with continued home exercises programmes.

If you suffer from vertigo, dizziness or balance problems due to this, Vestibular Rehabilitation may be exactly what you need. If you would like to find out more or find out whether your symptoms are something we can help you with then click the button below to contact me directly.
